Installation at Townsville, Queensland, Australia. "Strand Ephemera" October 2001 "The Tribe"
"Tribe" consisted of 7 "boogie" boards fiberglassed and standing erect with concrete feet and welded frames. It was among 32 sculptures selected for the 2 kilometre stretch of beachfront at the Strand in Townsville, Queensland. The concept was site specific and for me and developed by my walking this area and observing the spirit of fun and playfulness enjoyed by so many. My research indicated that "boogie boards" rather than surfboards are an integral part of Townsville beach culture due to the absence of surf in the area.
Most fufilling however, was the public usuage of "Tribe". The boards served as photographic pose points for children at the beach, as towel hangers for wet towels and I observed children naming the pieces and talking to them. I am happy.
Unsold works now reside in the Childrens' Ward at Townsville Hospital.
Installation at Bicentennial Park, Homebush Bay, Sydney, "re-creation" exhibition 3 December - 31 January 2002
"Pink Sink" , (sink, 200 rubber gloves, mixed media) doubles as "room with a view" and public interaction was rewarding. It was fondled, posed questions and used as a photographic prop.
